More than a club promoter

As bad as it sounds I have clients today that come to me for a drink or two who were born when I started in the nightlife business.

The crazy thing is that it all started as a hobby yet twenty-some years later it has become a career and a lifestyle. The good thing is that those clients who were born when I started as a nightclub promoter are now of legal age to have those drinks.

I decided to write this blog in order to educate people a bit more about what it is that I do for a living, and maybe to even educate some of my fellow club promoters and help them turn into nightlife entrepreneurs but what is a nightlife entrepreneur you may ask yourself? and the answer is not so simple, therefore I will be posting pieces of the puzzle that is my job today and the way I came to it or it came to me.

Back in 1994 when I first decided to start an adventure with a group of high school friends and begin a small business out of the idea that we could GET PAID for throwing parties and open houses after school on the weekends, charge a small all you can drink cover charge, where the only receipt you got was a red solo cup, and the only drink the bar served was draft beer that had to be bought by a homeless guy who offered to do so since we had no id or legal age to do so.

I never would have thought the business would have turned the way it did, this was a fun idea but it was not a smart one if you asked our parents or any of our teachers or counselors, even more, it would not be an actual business, this was just a hobby.

Last year we celebrated twenty-five years of very successful parties, concerts, events, and nightclubs and we can only see twenty-five more coming our way.

When this all began people started calling us promoters, a term that was very exciting for an 18-year-old kid just out of High School who believed that getting free drinks, meeting all the girls and getting into clubs was the most important thing in life. Now getting paid for it was just a plus.

Today I have gone from a club promoter to what I decided to call a Nightlife Entrepreneur, without any actual college education that pertains to this career, yes career! this will be the last time you hear me call it a hobby.

What happened? When did it happen? How did I get here? These are some of the few things I will talk about in this blog. but more importantly, I will tell you how you can do it too, and how you can do it better than me.

Why not call it a hobby anymore? well, we opened the business with $50 that my father lent me to start a bank account, we have had over 100 employees at one time, opened clubs in the USA and outside the country, ran a successful business for over twenty years and believe that this should be a career that people could actually specialize in. I would love my son to follow in my footsteps, but I would love for him to actually study this career and actually start as a nightlife entrepreneur, not just a club promoter.
